~ Ioan Marin Malinas: „Dypticon or patriarchal and imperial chronology“

“Ioan Marin Mălinaş presents the researchers in history and critics his tenth book entitled “Dypticon or Patriarchal and Imperial Chronology”, designed to begin a trilogy of the Pentarchy (the system of the five leaders or patriarchs, in the first Christian millennium: Old Rome, Constantinople – New Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem), of the Old Orientals (Assyrians, Copts, Armenians, Syrians, Ethiopians etc.), of the autocephalous and autonomous Primates in the pre and post imperial epoch – 1453 – of the Greek Catholics of all ethnic groups and rites, as well as of the Patriarchs of Latin Rite imposed by the crusaders in Constantinople and Christian Orient.

The work is also the first scientific chronology of World Church History in the Romanian Theological literature, useful both to the Faculties of Theology and to those of arts.

In order to have a better placement of the local hierarchy in the epoch, in the state and ethnic context, the second part of the work by Ioan Marin Mălinaş provides an “imperial chronology” of the leaders of Constantinople, of the Ottoman sultans, of the caliphs, of the Persian shahs, of the Armenian and Georgian kings, of the Bulgarian and Serb tsars, of the emperors and Latin principles, installed by the crusaders in Constantinople and in the Near East, etc.

The chronological lists in this work are preceded by forewords followed by comments, which emphasise various aspects in the history of the patriarchs, synods or church, political, cultural or administrative centres in the Orient. Due to this work we shall have a detailed chronology of the popes in the Romanian literature from now on.

In conclusion, besides the chronological lists of the hierarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church (and of the Greek Catholic Church) drafted with much competence by Rev. Prof. Dr. Mircea Păcurariu from Sibiu, the chronological lists of the Roman Catholic bishops and United Armenians in Transylvania and all over Romania, of the Evangelical, Reformed, Unitarian bishops and of the great rabbis in the great Principality of Transylvania, recently drafted by His Excellency Dr. Jakubinyi Gyorgy, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Alba Iulia, the Dypticon or patriarchal and imperial chronology of Ioan Marin Mălinaş provides the researchers with the hierarchic structure of the entire Church or of the World Church, starting with the epoch of the Saint Apostles until nowadays.

It is a strictly specialised work and an instrument of work indispensable to any researcher of World Church History, of Byzantinology, Patrology of even of lay history, so that we recommend it to all those interested, and wish every success and new scientific achievements to its author.”

The foreword that His Eminence Nicolae ends “with hierarchic blessings” is dated Timişoara, the feast of the Three Saint Hierarchs, 30 January 2006 . The book was published by Clujana University Press, Cluj-Napoca, 2006, 398  A4 pages.
